Sadly, many fake news sites have been using Haiti’s crisis as a means of generating fake ie untrue news stories about aid being given to Haiti by popular celebrities like Usain Bolt and Shakira. However, there has been some real stories of people giving large sums of money to help the western hemisphere’s poorest country.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum has an estimated net worth of $18 Billion and has sent £300,000 of aid to Haiti on his private jet. Yet, some people think Usain Bolt who has an estimated net worth of $60-32 million, can afford to send $10million dollars! Come on people, use common sense!
The Independent has reported:
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum sent 90 tonnes of emergency supplies in his Boeing 747 to the Caribbean island in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.
Haiti is still reeling from the effects of the 2010 earthquake and an ongoing cholera outbreak which has killed around 10,000 people so far.
According to the Dubai government, the Sheikh’s wife, Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, personally oversaw the relief mission which included tents, mosquito nets, medical supplies and water purification units.
You can tell this is a fact checked story because you can actually see the aid being sent and the source of the news story.
