Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards for her performance in Fences. As expected Viola gave an exceptional inspirational speech, as the only Black actress to win an Oscar, Emmy and Tony(for acting- Whoopie Goldberg won her’s for producing).
Viola’s post-award interview was equally as thought provoking and passionate
Viola Davis’s speech and interview were able to shed light on the world of Black actors and actress. This is a world, where too often they cannot simply be people, characters and explore the whole human experience. Whereas, many of the roles people of colour embody are symbolic or historical. These roles are great but they should be able to act in and we should be able to see the complexity of people living normal lives. Showing that in that normality there are inspirational and thought provoking themes and stories. All actors should be able to play multifaceted and complex characters; just like the Black people and everyone else in society.
Many will say Best Picture winner Moonlight attempts to tell the diversity of the Black experience.
